Now that Kanye (who openly admitted to hating blue) is gone, Nike has stepped up their blues!
Jordan Brand, especially the Jordan 1, is known for its typical Bred and Black/White colourways. However, once in a blue moon, the designers feel azurey and bring back some iconic colourways… Right now, we’re all feeling pretty blue, and I’m sure some of us want to reflect that in our footwear. And for the rest, we still gotta match the summer sky we are all waiting for! 2021 is the year of blue shoes, and Jordan Brand has prepared for this trend throughout the last years to give us some options to fall back to!
From UNC’s to Royals, we round up the Top 5 Blue Jordan 1s of the Last Years!
5. Nike x Union LA Air Jordan 1 ‘Storm Blue’
Many sneakerhead’s ultimate grail, this incredible collaboration between Union Brand and Jordan is definitely one for the history books! Keeping it low at first, the two iterations of the Air Jordan 1 were pretty talked-about, but nobody expected the hype. Wearers started to notice the incredible leather quality and appreciate the vintaged look that the collaboration displays, leading to a surge in demand! The creamy midsole combined with the explicit yellow stitching lines just gives the sneaker that unique DIY vibe. The shoe itself is a mixture of two extremely popular colourways in the Jordan domain (Bred and Storm Blue), and the blue-red combination – you might notice the trend – simply tops all other methods that try to make Blue sneakers even better.
Can’t break the bank? The Nike Air Jordan 1 Mid SE Union Blue is a perfect alternative for you!
4. Nike Air Jordan 1 Royal
Regardless of whether you need a low, mid or high-top sneaker, you simply can’t go wrong with a Royal Jordan 1! Clean, simple colourblocking, keeping it low-key, but still majestic. Gorgeous shoes, iconic colourway, easy to wear. Nothing to add. Won’t make you feel blue.
Prefer Dunks over Jordans? The Nike Dunk Low Hyper Cobalt is a perfect alternative, sticking to near-identical colours!
3. Nike Air Jordan 1 UNC
1984. Michael Jordan receives his contract with Nike. University of North Carolina, MJ’s alma mater is chosen as one of the colourways on the first pair. The Air Jordan 1 UNC is born. The world hasn’t been the same since.
Seriously though, the UNC colourway is an all-time classic. While the colours symbolize the titular college, most eyes will be drawn on this sneaker simply due to its magnificent radiation of sky-blue. The perfect unisex colorway, summer-ready, but also an easy-to-wear winter shoe, the Jordan 1 UNC is an all-time classic, both as a high-, and a low-top version.
If the blue is too blue for you, and you crave that extra bit of red-splash, Jordan has released the iconic colourway as two combo-sneakers to symbolize the MJ’s shift from North Carolina to Chicago: The Air Jordan 1 UNC to CHI and its homonymous sibling that joined the Fearless collection of 2019 (Air Jordan 1 Fearless UNC to CHI).
Again, you prefer Dunks over Jordans? The Nike Dunk Low Kentucky might be a great white/blue alternative for you!
2. Nike Air Jordan 1 Obsidian
Apart from the Minecraft players, I don’t know how many admirers of this shoe know what Obsidian actually looks like. Spoiler alert: the sneaker is called Obsidian because of the dark navy aspect (which resembles the igneous rock), not the light blue. Instead, the UNC-blue once again symbolises Michael Jordan’s Alma Mater (University of North Carolina – UNC), and to give the shoe more retro-feels, the material stays true to the original Air Jordan 1 released in 1985. The arrangement of the four tones creates a clean silhouette that is 100% rock-able in all seasons!
Keep mining the obsidian. What’s your favourite shoe? Mine is the Obsidian.

1. Nike Air Jordan 1 University Blue
Seemingly out of the Blue, it only took a few leaked images of this Silhouette, and the entire sneaker-world went crazy. In November 2020, Instagram-leaker @ryivibes posted an image of what would mark the potentially best sneaker to release in 2021: The Air Jordan 1 University Blue. Finally, after some delays, fans could get their hands on (a few) pairs in March this year.
Unlike many UNC-based silhouettes, this version sees the Sky-Blue in all nubuck leather, giving it a premium aesthetic and feel. The base remains the classic tumbled black and white leather, a standard Jordan 1 equipment. But this colourway… I simply still cannot get my eyes off it!
2020 and 2021 have been intense for everybody, but the University Blue finally brings us some relief. It provides hope and prosperity for what is yet to come, once the world returns to a better place. It adds the Rhythm to the Blues. The Air Jordan 1 University Blue is already a classic. It will remain an icon for years to come.
Pro tip: switch it up with white laces to make the shoe even more feisty!
